SEHATWEB.COM | JAKARTA — A systematic review study led by researchers at Anglia Ruskin University indicates that bamboo shoots have the potential to become a superfood candidate thanks to their nutrient-dense yet low-calorie nutritional profile.
Bamboo shoots contain dietary fiber, protein, essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant compounds that have been linked to improved metabolic health, blood sugar control, lipid profiles, digestive function, and cell protection from oxidative stress.
Several studies also indicate anti-inflammatory and probiotic effects, as well as the potential to inhibit the formation of toxic compounds during food processing.
However, consuming bamboo shoots requires proper preparation because some bamboo species contain cyanogenic glycosides that can release cyanide when eaten raw and potentially disrupt thyroid function.
Preliminary boiling is mandatory to eliminate these risks.
While initial findings are promising, clinical evidence in humans is still limited, requiring large-scale clinical trials before bamboo shoots can be widely recommended as a functional food based on scientific evidence. (*)
